Polonius
The father of Laertes and Ophelia, and the advisor of Claudius.
In Act 1, he orders his daughter to stay away from Hamlet because he doubts his intentions towards Ophelia. In Act 2, he finds out that Hamlet has become insane and he believes that it could be due to the order which he gave to his daughter. In order to prove if that was the case Claudius and he decide to spy on a conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia. While Claudius believed that Hamlet's anger was not due to his love for Ophelia, Polonius still believes otherwise. Thus in Act 3, Polonius carries out a solo mission to spy on the conversation between Hamlet and Gertrude. During this event Hamlet thinks that Polonius was Claudius, he stabs Polonius and Polonius' plan backfires and he dies. |
