Claudius
The newlywed husband of Gertrude, the brother of Old King Hamlet, and the uncle and step-father of Hamlet.
In Act 1, it is revealed that he is the new king and is fond of partying and drinking. It is also revealed by the spirit of his brother, that he is the one that murdered him. Throughout Act 3, Claudius is the only who believes that Hamlet may be putting up an act of madness in order to fool him. |
Thus, in Act 4, after finding out that Hamlet is the one who killed Polonius, he devised a plan to get rid of Hamlet. He does this because he thinks it is too dangerous to keep him in Denmark.
His plan backfires when he meets Hamlet again in Act 5. Therefore, he makes another plan with the help of Laertes in order to kill him while he duelled Laertes.
