Gertrude
The Queen of Denmark, Gertrude, who was first married to the Old King Hamlet and is now married to Claudius, her brother-in-law. She is also the mother of Hamlet, but is misunderstood by him as he believes that she should not have remarried, especially to a person with the character of Claudius.
Throughout Acts 1 to 3, Gertrude is worried about Hamlet, and lets Claudius carry out his plans so that he may get better or that they may be able to find a solution to his problem. The ghost of the Old King in act 1 claims that Gertrude is not at fault, and should not be troubled by Hamlet. However, in Act 3 during the conversation between Hamlet and Gertrude, Hamlet gets mad at her for remarrying. |
The ghost reappears in front of Hamlet to stop him from getting mad at Gertrude, this scene showed that the Old King really did love his wife and still does.
Even after she was, humiliated by Hamlet, she keeps his secret of his madness hidden from Claudius, and shows that she still cares about him.
Unfortunately at the end of act 5, Gertrude gets caught up in Claudius' plan and she ends up getting poisoned and killed.
